                                            Laurie,

You have done a terrific job with this paper.

Thanks for a great semester. I hope our paths cross again.

As discussed throughout chapter 7, creating a positive learning environment for both you and your students is paramount to a successful year. I strongly believe that a classrooms culture is almost as important, if not more important, then what is...

                                                Laurie,

You have done an excellent job with this reflection.

                                                This particularly struck me:

Personally, I speak my mind and that will continue to be true in my classroom.

                                                I have the same practice.

Your response here is exemplary. Thanks so much.

                                                    I loved this:

I could probably go on for days about how I would like my classroom to be and how I would like to be as a teacher, but let’s face it; we will not know how things will turn out until we have our own class. Each student is unique and brings a new aspect into the classroom.  I would like to think of my teaching style as ever revolving.

Self- Determination Theory (SDT) is a widely viewed theory that focuses on human motivation. Motivation is the driving factor to why people do what they do. An individual needs to be motivated to study for an exam, go to the gym to improve...

I found that article on passive versus active motivation really interesting as well and how learning something in order to teach it gives stronger motivation than being taught something in order to pass a test. It means that having to be good enough at something to explain it means is a deeper knowledge than passing a test.

                                                          Laurie,

You did an excellent job summarizing and reflecting on these articles. And you raised very valid points as you made sense of them for yourself, and you cited evidence from the text in order to support your arguments.

                                                          This jumped out at me:

I personally have been wondering how some of our behavioral theories we are learning about apply to the population with learning disabilities.

I have been coming to understand that most of the formal aspects of school are organized around behaviorist principles, which essentials systemically ensures the persistence of a focus on extrinsic motivation. And since we have all been to school, this feels "normal" to most of us.

The biggest disconnect is whenever we try to individualize learning, which I personally consider essential, and is at the heart of working with students with disabilities. So, what do you think you are going to do to meet this challenge?

Student motivation is one of the most important aspects a teacher should look at when creating lesson plans around a subject. I found the explanation on motives as goals to be very interesting. The text discussed the three types of student...

                                                              Laurie,

Thanks for doing such a thoughtful and thorough job with this response to book chapter. You have clearly internalized the key concepts and ideas, as evidenced by your synthesis of them and the questions you are asking.

                                                              I was struck by this:

I defiantly agree that motivation is a huge component in the degree in which a student learns. I fell that a lot of the examples and discussions in this chapter apply more to a general education setting then a special education setting

First, I respect and encourage defiance, particularly on the part of educators.

Second, I have a question - are you saying that children with special needs are different motivated than their peers or that the structures are not set up to be ideal for them? Or something else?
