              Antonia,

I think you designed a solid lesson here.

My only criticism, as I mentioned in class last night, is that it feels like a very straight line approach. I would have liked to have seen the lesson be more engaging for the students. As we discussed, I think the focus is about shapes and patterns and not measurement, and I think that focus would have allowed for more engagement.

I attribute this to your being trained as an elementary teacher and I think this approach would be very appropriate for younger students.

Despite my criticisms, I believe you were very thoughtful in the design of the lesson.

                      Antonia,

This is an area with which I am very familiar. It was developed in the mid 2000s by a set of administrators in Detroit to help serve that challenged area. At one point, I was able to correspond with one of the principals. It was a fascinating discussion.

I think you have done a good job synthesizing the research you conducted. I agree that much of the evidence has been either anecdotal or quasi-experimental.

I hope you continue to pursue this area.

                                  Antonia,

I enjoyed reading your response to these readings. I am very glad to see that they are stimulated some thinking and maybe even rethinking for you.

As you can tell, student ownership is key for me. And I am glad that it resonated with you as well. I especially liked this:

One major takeaway that I got from this chapter was the importance of democracy within the classroom. This is extremely important to me because I think that students are much more likely to take ownership of their learning when they are actively included in the process and feel heard, safe and respected.

My question to you, then, is: how will you design an learning environment in order to support this type of democracy?

This is a potentially really interesting topic.

In order to make your work more substantive, I suggest that you:

                                        Specify your definition of technology

Specify the impact or impacts you want to discuss

Specify the behavior or achievement you want to focus on.

                                            Antonia,

As usual, your response is thoughtful and substantive.

                                            I appreciate the shout out:

This immediately made me think of Ed 523 when we did the “on demand lesson” activity. Dr. Ardito pointed out in many of the lessons that student’s questions can often lead the lesson in directions which were not expected but can really deepen student’s understanding of it.

And I appreciate the connection you made to the transformation of formal into informal learning.

                                                      Antonia,

You clearly have a good feel for the world of these young adolescents. Your paper demonstrates a high degree of empathy with them and this highly stressful transition to middle school.

I think you captured their internal world really nicely here:

Their concerns as they enter middle school are varied and the way they handle the stress that stems from these concerns also varies.  I observed that friendships and peer relations are extremely important because they begin to spend a significant amount of time within their social group.
