Week 4

Week 4: “We shape our tools and thereafter our tools shape us," Father John Culkin

1. Reading. You should read Chapter 2 of Manovich, entitled "

2. Response. Your reading response this week will have two pieces:

a. What's your take? What is your overall sense of Manovich's arguments and how do they resonate with you? Please use specific examples from the text in your response.

b. Software shapes everything. There are two passages that jumped out at me when I was reading the chapter. "What exactly is media after software?" (p. 110) and "Software interprets anything it touches" (p.121-122).

For this week's reading response, pick at least one piece of educational software or software that can be used in an educational setting and see how the software shapes what can be done with it as well as the user.

Feel free to use screenshots and/or screencasts to support your arguments.

Tags - Please use the tag cs4tweek4 for your work this week.

3. Code is Beautiful. Starting next week, we are beginning a several week project where we will work together to learn to code (keeping a journal along the way). Initially, I was going to have all of us learn the same programming language. But then it occurred to me that it would be fun and productive to have you work in groups to learn a language of your choice, and then share what you have learned with us. So, this week, please think about  which of the following languages you would like to explore: Python, HTML, Javascript, or Processing. Do some investigating to see which calls to you.

4. Catching up. Some of you have not yet completed all the work from the first three weeks. Please use this week to get completely caught up. Next week begins our first big project and you will need to have the decks cleared. You can see the earlier work here: Week 1, Week 2, Week 3.
