Part 0 - Requesting Files


Pace's ITS generates two files for us. The first is a the course catalog, which is a list of courses and their instructors. The second is the student roster, which is a list of students per course. Here is an example of the email that get sent to ITS to request the two files get produced. These files are already formatted to meet the requirements for importing files into LiveText.

Part 1 - Which Courses?


I went to Pace Schedule Explorer and looked in each category of courses (Undergraduate - Teaching), Graduate (Education, Education Studies, Education Graduate, and Educational Leadership). The goal here was to identify the courses in which assessments are collected in LiveText. One can do this by cross referencing the courses with the various programs' assessment plans. I used this information to produce this spreadsheet, which is only being used for tracking purposes.

 

Part 2: Uploading the Course Catalog


Uploading the course catalog does two things.It creates the semester in LiveText and then populates the semester with courses and their instructors. For the Summer Courses, I am only uploading the courses which collect assessments through LiveText.

Our summer courses tend to have a variety of schedules for a variety of good reasons. To keep things simple for LiveText, I made these courses all part of one semester of the same length. Individual instructors will set due dates for the assignments in their courses.

Part 3: Adding Assignments to LiveText

Once the courses are set up, the next step is to assignment assignments/assessments to those courses as appropriate. The information for this is contained within the assessment plans for each program.

The easiest way to address this is to copy the assignments from recent iterations of the relevant courses.

Part 4: Uploading the Student Roster


Uploading the student roster populates the courses in LiveText with students.
Students will have either already activated their LiveText accounts or not (see below). In either case, as long as the appropriate information is contained in the imported file, LiveText will assign them to the appropriate CRN and flag them as needing to activate their accounts, if they are new to LiveText.

Part 5: Keycodes


Every School of Ed student is charged a fee for LiveText registration. Each of them, then, is entitled to receive a keycode, which allows them to activate their LiveText account. Until they do so, their name is marked in red in their course (rosters). Each semester, I ask the chairs to notify the instructors to validate their course rosters in LiveText. If any students are marked in red, they are encouraged to activate their LiveText account. If they are missing, or have dropped the course, the instructors are asked to notify me to add or delete them.
