Week 2 - It's Alan Kay's World, We Just Live In It: Revision

Week 2: It's Alan Kay's world, we are just living in it.

Now that we are getting the hang of Pace Commons, we are about to launch into some of the core work of the course.

We will do some reading, watch some video, and do some programming. And all of it starts with Alan Kay.

Kay was a key architect of what became the first personal computer. His work led to windows based GUIs (which inspired both Steve Jobs and Bill Gates during infamous visits to Kay's lab),and all kinds of innovations that gave us the technological world we currently live in. Interestingly, almost from the beginning, his interest was in investigating how these new types of computers could be used to positively impact learning. I think you might enjoy this video of Alan Kay presenting some of his core ideas about learning and teaching.

So, here's the work for this week.

1. Reading. Read the first chapter of Manovich entitled "Alan Kay's Universal Media Machine." If you don't yet have the book, I have uploaded a pdf version, which you can find here.

2. Response. Please respond to the reading
The chapter introduced the tension between creating new media and reusing older forms of media (remediation). For your response, please detail your understanding of Manovich. Then, consider his ideas as they might be applied to education. Please post your response by creating a blog post. Be sure to share it with the group. And don't forget we are a community, so please respond to others' responses. Feel free to include response to the video here as well. 3. Etoys. One of Kay's accomplishments is the development of a programming language called Smalltalk. It was designed to be used by anyone, even children, and was (and still is) incredibly powerful. One of it's descendants is Etoys, which we are going to play with. You can download it here. Once you do, work through these interactive demos and then create something on your own using Etoys. Try something you think is fun or would be interesting to your students (or both). Then, share it with us. You can use your blog for this as well. Again, use the tag cs4teachersweek2  for this work as well.

4. Connecting. Remember that just because we are working online (mostly), you have classmates and therefore colleagues, resources, and maybe even friends. As you are doing your work, I suggest that you connect, reach out, support and request support.
