      Arlene,

      You have done a very good job with this final project. You have very thoughtfully and thoroughly discussed each aspect of the course and connected with experiences from your own classroom and school.

      What strikes me about what you said is that is all fundamentally about the presence of absence of autonomy -- in students, in teachers, in the school community. If you have not already done so, I encourage you to look into Self Determination Theory (SDT). SDT posits that humans have three primary or fundamental needs -- autonomy, relatedness, and competence. When these needs are being met successfully, we experience ourselves as (intrisically) motivated and engaged. Take a look and see what you think.
