Xin's weekly breadcrumbs (13)

This week I have dedicated time outside of work hours to read and research student communication and relationship. If I want my students to learn I will have to form a positive relationship with them. There were days at the start of the school year when I feel like I have a well-planned lesson but I did not get the expected results from those lessons. I always wondered why and questioned my ability to engage students. Of course, there are many different factors influencing student's engagement but I believe that communication and relationship is the gateway to better lessons.

I am now seven months into my teaching career and I feel like I have formed a positive relationship with (most of) the students. There are still days when I feel like a lesson did not go well but it feels different from before. At the start of the year, I would blame a bad lesson on the students and their lack of focus. When I have a bad lesson now, I look for areas of weakness and think of ways to improve the bad lesson. I often reflect back to the start of the school year and I feel like I can make so many changes to my lessons and the way I can approach certain situations.

The one thing that I have learned in the last 7 month of teaching is that I have to be ok with not connecting with all 160 of my students. There will be students that I will not be able to ever engage. There will be students that will never care about what I do for them. The moment I realized that It was an instant relieve. The burden of trying to pass all 160 students was lifted and teaching becomes so much more enjoyable.
