How do I know they know?

In order to know that my students were competent in dealing with the classroom’s big ideas and essential questions, I would take two measures. First, I would give a writing assignment in class, that would touch upon the themes that are covered in the big ideas. An example would be for my question about doing what is right, even if it is not within the bounds of society. The students would be expected to write about an American who did what they thought was right, even if others berated them for it, such as Rosa Parks. I would then give a second written assignment that was more content based, in order to assess their understanding of the essential questions. One example could be, when dealing with the essential question regarding how peace treaties led to war in the 1900’s, I would ask them to literally write a response to the essential questions. They would also have to give examples in depth, such as the long-term effects of the Treaty of Versailles on German society.
