ED 631-Draft 1

Good Morning 631, My name is Usama Tahir and I am a Chemistry teacher at Epic High School South, Richmond Hill. I arrived in NYC almost 7 years ago, and have been on a journey since then, and I see teaching as a journey too, as we have our milestones and destination ahead of us. Teaching is a noble profession and it has been in my family for three decades.

I teach in a relatively small high school but full of lovely, talented students, whom I can relate to in many aspects and over time I see myself as a mentor figure because I have good rapport with almost all of my students, but with some I have a long way. My goal for this semester is to incorporate educational theories and models to inspire my students, and to bring about the motivation in them. Motivation comes from passion, and I have just been given a to teach a class on Science Fiction, which is something I am passionate about; hence, my goals would be to discover the passion of students I am struggling with so that I can inspire them and motivate them towards their academic and personal success. One of the aspirations I would want to achieve from this class would be to absorb and implement the experiences of my colleagues/friends in my own classrooms and share mine so that I can do whatever I can to do in improvement of all my students in all aspects.

You sound like a really passionate teacher. I know what you mean there are some students that you can reach but others that seem so far .No matter how much you try to help them it never seems to end up anywhere. Hopefully in this course we can learn some strategies to reach those students and to comprehend where they are coming from.

I totally agree, some we will get through too and some we will try and try, but nothing will change. My daily goal is to love and enjoy what I do and help create a better future. My strategy is to blockout some of it and put my best foot forward always. Cheers to all of us!

          Usama,

Thanks for such a lively introduction to yourself and your goals.

          This really struck me:

My goal for this semester is to incorporate educational theories and models to inspire my students, and to bring about the motivation in them. I, too, am passionate about Science Fiction. Be sure to share some of your favorites with me.

You may also want to start with the topic of motivation, since you are so keyed into it.

Check out this set of resources I have put together for the class. They are some readings on motivations that I know you will find interesting and useful.
