The Effects of Overparenting

For a topic that profoundly effects middle schoolers I was fascinated by the topic of over parenting. In this modern day it seems parents overall are more involved than ever in their child’s academics. Even the term “helicopter parent” was created because of the number of parents that hover over all their child’s movement. I am curious to find the effects this has the child and their academics. Is “overparenting” beneficial? Are there negative side effects to the child? I am thinking of even looking at other countries such as China, which has tremendously involved parents and ranks as consistently having top grades and students, and comparing them to American parents. Perhaps comparing and contrasting any if the effects this parenting style has on the students.

      Ann,

I think this is a really interesting topic, and one that has certainly shaped (for better or worse) teachers and students.

I suggest considering this as a continuum from "good" parent input to "less desirable" behavior.

      How's that?
