      You idea about doing observations is a terrific one:

      I think that focusing more on observing my students would be a good first step in deciding which students to call on.  Recording my observations is something that I haven’t done very much, which also makes it a great place to focus.  My teaching coach suggested that I ask one of my students to keep track of who I call on during a lesson, which could be a good way to get that data without feeling too overwhelmed during a lesson, or forgetting things after one.

      I also think it will be really interesting to see what happens when you have students record observations. I am wondering if it can become a classroom routine of some kind and that the role of "observer" shifts from day to day or week to week. I find myself wondering
