Excursion 2-3

Physical Space: For me creating a positive learning environment that promotes students learning is my priority when sitting up in my future classroom. I think students learn best when they feel a warm welcoming atmosphere. I am currently a student teaching at PS 140 and the classrooms are set up in a home like design. There are futons, bean bag chairs, cushions and some traditional tables/seats. I think this set up embodies the idea of a warm learning environment.  This setup is structured effectively because it allows students to get the home like feel while still engaging in the learning process. Furthermore, I will have a designated whole class instruction section where the students can meet for the overview of the lessons. This will be called the “family meeting area.” After instruction, students will be able to pick their designated spot for individual work or group work ( this is all depending on their preferences.) I will be moving around the room working with students who are struggling or those who asked for help. I want my class to be very inclusive and not separated by abilities. Flexible sittings is a priority for my classroom setting.

Student Autonomy: Students will have complete agency in their own learning. I am a firm believer of students learning best when they are able to have a voice in their learning. It is important as teachers to create instructions and assessments that students are interested in. The instructions should be interest driven and relevant to students to the learners. In relation to the hexagon of cooperative freedom, all students are given the same amount of time to get the work done. If they indicate or I have observed some/all will need more time, I will make adjustments for those students. I will try to make my content as relevant to the class as possible. I will try to create alternative assignments with the same standards. As mentioned before there will be no assigned seats. Students will be able to choose anywhere in the classroom to learn. The students will have the opportunity to work together or individually ( choice base). Through observation and submission of assignments, I will fully be able to understand what my students know and do not know.

Cooperative Student learning: The students will be given opportunity to work in small groups or individually. Most of the time this will be an option for students. An example of group work is students filling out a chart paper to answer the question given in the teaching point. This will allow me to know if my objective was met. They will work during independent reading and identifying the plot of their individual books.

      Heidi,

You have done a very solid job with this assignment. In your writing, I can clearly visualize how you "see" your students, how they learn, and what environment would best support that learning. It is interesting to me that you talk about the learning environment in both physical terms (e.g., choice of seating) and psychological terms (using words like "family," and "home").

I was particularly intrigued by your discussion of student autonomy. You said:

Students will have complete agency in their own learning. I am a firm believer of students learning best when they are able to have a voice in their learning. It is important as teachers to create instructions and assessments that students are interested in.

What stuck out for me here was the connection you are making between autonomy, voice, and relevance. I can see that you have thought deeply about this, and have a clear sense of how to have these students be the most themselves as they are learning.

You also clearly articulated the process you expect to employ:

Through observation and submission of assignments, I will fully be able to understand what my students know and do not know.

I am glad to see that you see yourself as a learner in the environment as well. It my experience as a teacher, this stance can serve as a very powerful experience for your students.
